Budget Hotels in Madrid are enormous in quanity, price and quality. Not all are the same of course and it takes up quite a few hours to make the right choices amongst those many hostales, spanish b&b's, little houses types where private owners rent rooms for 20 to 50 Euro the night. Madrid is probably the "Mecca" of budget hotels, there are a couple of streets around the Gran Via area where there is nothing else than small cheap hotels one after the next and they all make money. When you walk around from door to door you will notice that many of these owners speak either some broken english or french. You will also get a feel of how much it should cost, and what the current situation is in demand and supply. Prices can vary quite a bit depending on how booke up those hotels are. There is always the opportunity to negociate as well. But be warned on some days during high season, spring ans autum, you might find it hard to get a good room for a few bugs. Perhaps its a good idea to have a look around in the Internet a few days before you arrive in Madrid just to get a feel of how booked up budget hotels are.
